The Shelby Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was chartered on March 6, 1983 by our 20th Past National President Dr. Bertha Maxwell Roddy. Members were once part of the Gastonia Alumnae Chapter, but saw the need to establish a chapter in Cleveland County. The charter members were Sorors Gwendolyn Atkinson, Josephine Bess, Carol Boyd, Mildred Enloe, Aileen Ford, Eula Fowler, Debra Gardner, Anganette Homsley, Lillian Howell, Helen Love, Linda Meeks-Holton, and Dessie Turner

Chapter members work diligently on the national Five Point Program Thrust, which includes involvement in Educational Development, Economic Development, Physical and Mental Health, Political Awareness and Involvement, and Social Action. The chapter has financially supported numerous projects in our local area including contributions to the county library, UNCF, sponsorship of high school athletes for competition, and sponsorship of the Minority Enterprise Week. Sorors are actively involved in the political arena by planning and conducting voter registration workshops, serving on elected and appointed governmental positions; and have a lifetime commitment to the NAACP. Social action activities have been initiated by working with Habitat for Humanity, the Women's Shelter, the Girls Club YMCA, and sponsoring needy families at Thanksgiving and Christmas. We celebrate our Sorority's events such as May Week and Founder's Day.

Our past Chapter Presidents have been Sorors Aileen Ford, Mildred Enloe, Anganette Homsley, Angela Cunningham, Angela Hauser, Peggy Washington, Gwendolyn Atkinson, Mary Degree, Annette Toms, Delores Hunt, Crystal Miller and Patty Smith. Our current President is Peggy Washington.

LEADERSHIP

OUR PROGRAMS

Since its founding in 1913, Delta Sigma Theta has clearly distinguished itself as a public service organization that boldly confronts the challenges of African Americans and, hence, all Americans. Over the years, a wide range of programs addressing education, health, international development, and strengthening of the African American family have evolved. In realizing its mission, Delta Sigma Theta provides an extensive array of public service initiatives through its Five-Point Programmatic Thrust of Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and Political Awareness and Involvement. The Clinton Alumnae Chapter strives to implement programs that fall under our National Guidelines.

Financial planning, consumer education, money management, investments and employment opportunities are but a few of Delta's concerns addressed under economic development.

  • Educational Development

Each year, local Delta Chapters conduct projects designed to address the community's concerns about excellence in education. On a national level, Delta's pursuit of educational excellence takes the form of scholarships and grants to individual members and local chapters.

  • International Awareness and Involvement

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has always been a proponent of helping those who are in need, especially in third world countries.

  • Physical and Mental Health

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has programs designed to address health education programs and health fairs. Delta also supports medical research that examines illnesses that affect specific segments of the country's population.

  • Political Awareness and Involvement

Though non-partisan in nature and purpose, Delta understands the importance of and the need for an informed electorate. Delta's concern for the public's "need-to-know" and the enfranchisement of all Americans has been the philosophical basis for public service programs in this area.

Without community service, we would not have a strong quality of life. It's important to the person who serves as well as the recipient. It's the way in which we ourselves grow and develop.
